While admiring ancient items in museums, we do not suspect that they are created by imperfect tools. Later, when people discovered and mastered iron, the incisors forged from it replaced bronze ones. They were harder than bronze, but not significantly. And only after the 7th century BC craftsmen of ancient Greece have learned to quench iron, the hardness of ancient incisors has become close to the hardness of modern graver. By the same era, such an ancient craft as medallic art, which is one of the oldest in the world, also appears. It was necessary to have great skill and artistic taste to harmoniously fit the image into given form, skillfully combining it with the inscription. Not coincidentally Homer called the medalist “glorious craftsmen.” Samples that have survived to the present day in the form of ancient Greek coins and stones impress the imagination of contemporaries. How did the ancient craftsmen succeed such perfection without having modern optical devices, high-precision pantographs, laser printers and other technical tricks? The shadow of centuries lay on the mysteries and secrets of engravers of those years and hid them from descendants.

    But, despite this, the ancient art did not die. And to this day there are craftsmen who prove that in our time of the space age and the development of nanotechnology, manual labor is too early to discard.
